Aleppo - SMART

On Sunday, the Free Aleppo University Student Union refused to join the Higher Education Council of the Salvation Government operating in Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)-controlled areas.

The student union stated that the Higher Education Council wished to transfer the Free Aleppo University's management to the council's al-Shahbaa Aleppo University (formerly al-Nahda), but the students refused, saying that they are not an extension of military factions such as the HTS.

The student union stated, "The council cannot force us (to change our management). We refuse to give our personal information and examination documents to a party other than the one we are affiliated with, and that is the Free Aleppo University led by Yassin Khalifa."

On Saturday, the Higher Education Council said that it is determined to take over all private universities and institutes in southern Idlib and western Aleppo. Students from southern Idlib protested against the Salvation Government's decision to suspend their exams until their university obtains a license from the Salvation Government.

The Free Aleppo University follows the Syrian Interim Government's Ministry of Education, while the HTS brought the Salvation Government to the entire Idlib governorate and the western Aleppo countryside after gaining control of the area in early 2019.
