Idlib - SMART

The Salvation Government, which operates in the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)-controlled areas, issued a decision to close unlicensed private universities in the Idlib governorate, Northern Syria.

The Syrian Salvation Government is an alternative Syrian government-affiliated with the HTS, formed without an election at the end of November 2017. It has been seated within the Idlib Governorate since the HTS took control of the border and the internal crossings to be against the Interim Syrian Government.

On Monday, the Higher Education Council of the Salvation Government stated that it decided to sen the cases of all unlicensed private universities to court and to send to educational staff to a “disciplinary board.” The Council’s statement mentioned that it will work on adjusting the statuses of the closed universities’ students.

The students of the Salvation International University called for a sit-in near the local councils of the cities of Maarraat al-Numan and Ariha, southern Idlib.

On Saturday, the Higher Education Council said that it is determined to take over all private universities and institutes in southern Idlib and western Aleppo. Students from southern Idlib protested against the Salvation Government's decision to suspend their exams until their university obtains a license from the Salvation Government.

The Salvation Government is pressuring civil institutions, local council, and universities to affiliate with the Government after the HTS gained total control of the areas following battles with the Free Syrian army.
