The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during the founding meeting of the network of cooperation of the Crescent and Red Cross societies in Istanbul, that the establishment of a safe zone in Northeastern Syria aims to return four million refugees from Turkey, according to Anadolu agency.

Erdogan said that they would achieve security and stability east of the Euphrates region soon, as they have succeeded in other areas of Syria. Erdogan added that they would eliminate the Islamic State (IS) and other terrorist organizations that have been trained against Turkey."

On Friday, Erdogan said that he expected the completion of the safe zone in Northern Syria within a few months, adding that it will be under Turkish supervision.

On Jan. 14, 2019, the United States President Donald Trump said that they would establish a 20-mile safe zone in Northern Syria and do not want the Kurds to provoke Turkey. The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the safe zone aims to prevent the attack from Syria on Turkey and to protect the Syrian Democratic Forces that fight the IS.

Turkey plans to launch a military attack against the Kurdish People's Protection Units. The Turkish Minister of Defense Hulusi Akar stated that Turkey is preparing for a counter-terrorism military operation in areas east of the Euphrates River, while Erdogan said that Turkey had completed its preparations for a military operation.
