Idlib - SMART

The Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) withdrew from two buildings that it seized earlier in the city of Maarrat al-Nu'man in southern Idlib, Northern Syria, in accordance with an agreement between the HTS and local and consultative councils.

The HTS is an Islamist opposition faction previously known as the al-Nusra Front, consisting of fighting groups including the Haqq Brigade, Jabhat Ansar al-Din, and Jaysh al-Sunnah.

On Tuesday, a private source reported to SMART that the HTS members withdrew from the main bank building and historic Qishla building, returning them to the local council after an agreement between them. The agreement called for the removal of all military bases in the area, including Free Syrian Army, Islamist battalions, and HTS bases.

The source added that the Suqour al-Sham Brigade of the National Liberation Front was based in the buildings earlier.

The source added that all Free Syrian Army (FSA) and Islamist factions have evacuated their military bases in the area.

On Monday, the HTS seized the two buildings after entering the city for the first time, pushing dignitaries from Maarrat al-Nu'man to meet with the city's military council to discuss a mechanism to remove all military bases from the city.

The HTS frequently attacks service and medical centers in addition to other factions' bases in the Idlib governorate after gaining control of the area following an agreement with the FSA.
