Al-Raqqa - SMART

On Tuesday, the Initial Response Team (IRT) of the al-Raqqa civil council retrieved 17 new bodies from a mass grave and destroyed buildings in the al-Raqqa governorate, Northeastern Syria.

A source from the IRT reported to SMART that the team retrieved 12 bodies from a mass grave in the village of Fkheikha, including the bodies of two children, who were returned to their families. The team did not identify the remaining bodies, according to the source.

The source added that the team also retrieved four unidentified bodies from under the rubble of a building in the al-Bayaterah neighborhood, saying that the team buried all bodies in the Tal al-Baiah (also known as al-Shuhada) cemetery in northeastern al-Raqqa.

It has been a year since the Syrian Democratic Forces, supported by the International Coalition against the Islamic State (IS), gained control of the al-Raqqa after expelling the IS from it. The remnants of the battles are still present in the city. The battle killed thousands of people who were buried in dozens of mass graves.
