Turkey - SMART

The French government announced the possibility of allowing French jihadists detained in Syria to return to France. The French government linked this to the decision of the United States to withdraw from Syria.

On Wednesday, French media quoted a statement by the French Foreign Ministry as saying "Because of the development of the military situation in Northeastern Syria, the US decisions, and to ensure the security of the French, we are considering all options to avoid the escape and spread of these dangerous persons." The French Foreign Ministry noted that about 150 French members of the Islamic State (IS) were detained by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

French media also stated, "If the forces guarding the French fighters decide to expel them to France, they (the fighters) will be presented to a court of law."

The French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said in a statement to the BFM television channel that the decision is linked to the US withdrawal from Syria, and the result is the deportation of jihadists, including the French.

On January 19, 2019, the White House said that the US military began withdrawing its forces from Syria to the US after the Wall Street Journal quoted US officials as saying that Washington discussed withdrawing all its military forces from the region.

Castaner noted that the returning French jihadists will be detained to reassure the critics of the decision in French, such as the National Rally Party.

On January 21, 2019, Fener Kayat Karaba, the deputy joint president of the Foreign Relations office in the Kurdish Autonomous Administration said that two thousand fighters of 46 nationalities are waiting to return to their countries, demanding all countries to uphold their legal obligation to expedite in the receival of its citizens.

Earlier, the SDF and Kurdish Autonomous Administration handed over dozens of detained IS fighters and their familis from Russia, Chechnya and Kazakhstan.
