Idlib - SMART

On Tuesday, Hassan Sufan, the former leader of the Ahrar al-Sham movement called for the dissolution of the Shura Council in the movement, accusing it of obstructing its military action in Northern Syria.

Sufan stated to SMART that he has been asking to dissolve the Shura Council totally since he assumed the leadership position and until his disqualification, as a result of stirring sedition and giving the impression that the movement's orientations are not one-way and do not meet on a decision, which caused the damage to the work.

Sufan added that his biggest problem with the Shura Council is to make it binding on many of the issues that the movement leader was supposed to be responsible for, which led to the disruption of many decisions and failure always in the face of accelerating challenges. He added that he asked to change it and he insisted on, but they refused and decided to change the leader of the Ahrar al-Sham movement.

Sufan added that the Shura Council should be dissolved, end the role of the eight characters on it and it should be replaced by a new, more effective leadership council which aims to continue the movement work and its project in the light of the new reality.

Sufan noted that it is necessary to focus on strengthening the military action, proving the existence of the Ahrar al-Sham in confronting the Syrian government forces away from internal fighting, and participating in revolutionary activities and projects that help to protect the region.

In early August 2018, Ahrar al-Sham appointed Hassan Sufan as its leader, but it withdrew from the leadership position mid-August and appointed Jaber Ali Basha instead.

On February 18, 2018, the Ahrar al-Sham and the Nur al-Din Zanki Movement merged under the name of the Liberation Front of Syria and joined the National Liberation Front in early last August 2018.
