Aleppo - SMART

The Ahrar al-Sharqiya faction handed over some of its fighters to the military police of the Syrian Interim Government after the fighters were accused of killing an internally displaced civilian from Eastern Ghouta, Damascus, in the city of Afrin near Aleppo, Northern Syria.

On Thursday, Hossam Abu Muhammad, a member of the Ahrar al-Sharqiya security office, reported that they handed over the fighters to the military police for interrogation, adding that the civilian was shot by his brother by mistake and not by the fighters.

Abu Muhammad said, “Displaced people from Eastern Ghouta are not convinced that our fighters did not kill the civilian, and some fighters of Jaysh al-Islam are inciting the people against us.”

On Saturday, forcibly displaced people (FDP) from Eastern Ghouta in Afrin demanded the referral of Ahrar al-Sharqiya fighters to the judiciary, accusing them of killing a civilian by shooting him.

On social media, activists circulated a video showing a person being killed while trying to prevent fighters from storming a library. The activists said that the man was killed by mistake by his brother while the first was trying to prevent the Ahrar al-Sharqiya fighters from entering.

The Free Syrian Army (FSA) in Afrin has been accused of kidnappings, killings and robberies since it gained control of the area in March 2018. Military factions have also been accused of committing violations against residents, medical workers, humanitarian organization staff and activists.

Thousands of FDP from Eastern Ghouta and towns in southern Damascus, including a large number of Palestinian refugees, arrived in Afrin and other parts of Northern Syria after the Islamist battalions and FSA factions operating in the region reached displacement agreements with Russia and the Syrian government.
