Idlib - SMART

On Thursday night, the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and Islamic battalions defeated an attempt by the Syrian government forces and loyalist militias to advance in eastern Idlib, Northern Syria.

A spokesman for the National Liberation Front, which is affiliated with the Syrian National Army of the Syrian Interim Government, Captain Naji Mustafa, reported to SMART that the opposition factions and Islamic battalions have defeated more than one attempt by the Syrian government forces and loyalist militias to advance in the village of Abu Jarif, eastern Idlib.

Mustafa added that the clashes killed and injured more than 15 members of the Syrian government and loyalist militias. Mustafa said that an anti-tank missile also destroyed a tank, killing its crew.

The Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) media announced that the HTS and the Wa Harred al-Mu’minin operations room, which includes Islamic battalions, such as the Guardians of Religion, Ansar al-Tawhid and Turkistan Islamic Party, defeated a Syrian government’s attempt to advance. The HTS media added that the clashes killed and injured members of the Syrian government forces.

On Jan. 16, FSA factions and Islamist battalions regained control of the village of Abu Jarif, eastern Idlib, hours after the Syrian government forces had gained control of it.

Since Nov. 25, 2019, the Syrian government forces and loyalist militias, with the support of Russia, have been launching a ground military attack on southern and eastern countryside of Idlib. They intensified the attack on Dec. 20, 2019, as the Syrian government gained control of dozens of villages and towns in the region, after intense bombing, killing and injuring hundreds of civilians, and displacing hundreds of thousands of others.

The attack is a continuation of the military operation launched by the Syrian government forces and Russia on April 25, 2019. In August 2019, the Syrian government gained control of northern Hama countryside and the Khan Sheikhun region. Military analysts and journalists say that the battles’ goal is that the Syrian government and Russia gain control of the Aleppo - Damascus international highway (which connects Turkey with Jordan and the Arab Gulf states) to be opened later under Russian-Turkish sponsorship according to the agreement between President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in September 2018, in the Russian city of Sochi.
