Aleppo - SMART

On Monday, Russian warplanes committed a massacre against civilians in southwestern Aleppo, Northern Syria.

Sources from the Civil Defense reported to SMART that Russian airstrikes killed three civilians and injured seven others in the village of Kafr Taal in the southwestern countryside of Aleppo.

The sources added that Syrian government warplanes shelled the village of Kafr Jaloum in the same area, killing a 20-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl, and injuring three other civilians.

Local sources said that the bombing on Kafr Jaloum destroyed houses and killed plenty of livestock.

Local sources reported to SMART that Russian warplanes shelled the village of al-Jinah in the western countryside of Aleppo, killing a civilian and a child at an early count. A similar bombing injured three other civilians in the village of Kafr Nouran of the al-Atarib area.

The Russian warplanes also bombed the Rif al-Muhandisin and Shamico suburbs, and the perimeter of the 46th regiment in the southern and western countryside of Aleppo. No information about human casualties were reported.

Russia and the Syrian government forces have intensified their bombings on villages and towns of the southern and western countryside of Aleppo since Jan. 17, 2020, killing and injuring civilians, amidst expectations of a ground attack by the two parties to gain control of the Aleppo-Damascus highway.

Since Nov. 25, 2019, the Syrian government forces and loyalist militias, with the support of Russia, have been launching a ground military attack on southern and eastern countryside of Idlib. They intensified the attack on Dec. 20, 2019, as the Syrian government gained control of dozens of villages and towns in the region, after intense bombing, killing and injuring hundreds of civilians, and displacing hundreds of thousands of others.

This ground attack is considered a continuation of the military operation launched by the Syrian government forces and Russia on April 25, 2019. In August 2019, the Syrian government gained control of northern Hama countryside and the Khan Sheikhun region. Military analysts and journalists say that the battles’ goal is that the Syrian government and Russia gain control of the Aleppo - Damascus international highway (which connects Turkey with Jordan and the Arab Gulf states) to be opened later under Russian-Turkish sponsorship according to the agreement between President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in September 2018, in the Russian city of Sochi.
