Aleppo - SMART

On Wednesday, Russian airstrikes killed two women and a civilian and injured other civilians in western Aleppo, Northern Syria.

A Civil Defense source reported to SMART that Russian warplanes bombed a refugee camp on the outskirts of the city of al-Atarib, western Aleppo, killing two women and injuring a child and a woman. Civil Defense teams transported the wounded to nearby hospitals.

Local sources reported to SMART that Syrian government forces stationed at the Shughaydla dam shelled the village of al-Hamira, southern Aleppo, killing a civilian and injruing two others. A similar shelling hit the village of Birnah.

Military and local sources reported that Russian warplanes bombed the town of Hayan and villages of Bashqateen, al-Mansoura, Khan al-Asal, Khan Tuman, Khulsa, Maarat al-Artiq and the Rif al-Muhanidsin suburb. No casualties were reported.

The sources added that the Syrian government forces stationed at the Military Academy shelled the al-Rashideen neighborhood in Aleppo, Shamico suburb, and al-Mansoura, Kafr Dael, Khan al-Asal, Khulsa, and Khan Tuman. No casualties were reported.

Russia and the Syrian government forces have intensified their bombings on villages and towns of the southern and western countryside of Aleppo since Jan. 17, 2020, killing and injuring civilians. The two parties are expected to launch a ground attack to gain control of the Aleppo-Damascus highway.

Since Nov. 25, 2019, the Syrian government forces and loyalist militias, with the support of Russia, have been launching a ground military attack on southern and eastern countryside of Idlib. They intensified the attack on Dec. 20, 2019, as the Syrian government gained control of dozens of villages and towns in the region, after intense bombing, killing and injuring hundreds of civilians, and displacing hundreds of thousands of others.

This ground attack is considered a continuation of the military operation launched by the Syrian government forces and Russia on April 25, 2019. In August 2019, the Syrian government gained control of northern Hama countryside and the Khan Sheikhun region. Military analysts and journalists say that the battles’ goal is that the Syrian government and Russia gain control of the Aleppo - Damascus international highway (which connects Turkey with Jordan and the Arab Gulf states) to be opened later under Russian-Turkish sponsorship according to the agreement between President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in September 2018, in the Russian city of Sochi.
