Syria - SMART

On Friday, hundreds of civilians demonstrated in the city of Idlib and near the Bab al-Salamah crossing on the Syrian-Turkish border, Northern Syria, condemning the Syrian government forces and Russian military campaign on the area.

About 300 people demonstrated in the city of Idlib, raising the Syrian Revolution flag and banners that read, “Fighting needs men and in Idlib we have brave men,” “Aleppo, be patient,” “Aleppo needs your solidarity,” “Aleppo is calling on Euphrates Shield and Peace Spring,” and, “We will not accept ceasefire agreement and guarantors anymore.”

Local activists reported to SMART that dozens of people demonstrated near the Bab al-Salamah crossing in the city of Azaz, 48 kilometers north of Aleppo, calling on the Turkish-backed National Army of the Syrian Interim Government to regain control of their areas, currently controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces. The demonstrators also condemned the bombing on the western countryside of Aleppo.

According to activists, the demonstrators raised the Syrian Revolution flag and banners that read, “Yesterday bombings targeted Idlib and today Aleppo…The international community remains silent, the Russian guarantor is a killer, and the Syrian people is being killed and displaced,” “Liberating our homelands, returning to our houses, and overthrowing the criminal Bashar al-Assad, are our rights that we will not concede,” and, “The crime of displacing people continues.”

Russian warplanes resumed bombing the cities and towns of the Idlib governorate for the first time after the ceasefire truce, agreed upon by Russia and Turkey.

On Jan. 10, 2020, the Turkish Defense Ministry announced a ceasefire in the  governorate of Idlib starting from Jan. 12, 2020, after the Syrian government forces violated the ceasefire announced by Russia on Jan. 9, 2020.

Since Nov. 25, 2019, the Syrian government forces and loyalist militias, supported by Russia, have been launching a ground military attack on the southern and eastern countryside of Idlib. They intensified the attack on Dec. 20, 2019, as the Syrian government gained control of dozens of villages and towns in the region, after intense shelling. The shelling killed and injured hundreds of civilians, and displaced hundreds of thousands of others.

This attack is considered a continuation of the military operation launched by the Syrian government forces and Russia on Idlib on Apr. 25, 2019. During the military operation, the Syrian government forces gained total control of the northern countryside of Hama and the  area of Khan Sheikhun. Military analysts and journalists said that by this military operation, the Syrian government aims to gain control of the Aleppo-Damascus international highway that connects Turkey to Jordan and the Arab Gulf States in order to reopen it later under Russian and Turkish sponsorship agreed upon by the two countries.
