Turkey - SMART

On Friday, Turkish Defense Ministry announced the killing of 63 Syrian government forces members in the Idlib governorate, Northern Syria.

The ministry said on Twitter, "According to the latest information received from various sources in Idlib region, 63 Assad regime elements have been neutralized."

On Thursday, the Turkish Defense Minister, Hulusi Akar, said that Turkey will use force against those violating the ceasefire agreement in the Idlib governorate, Northern Syria, including "Radical groups." On Feb. 12, 2010, the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened to attack the Syrian government forces in areas outside the Sochi agreement.

On Tuesday, Turkey announced killing of 51 Syrian government forces members in Turkish shelling on Idlib.

Last week, Turkish Army sent military convoys to the Idlib governorate. Erdogan urged the Syrian government to withdraw its forces behind Turkish observation posts in Idlib by the end of February.

The Syrian government forces and loyalist militias, supported by Russia, are launching a ground military attack on the southern and eastern countryside of Idlib and the southern and western countryside of Aleppo. The Syrian government gained control of dozens of villages and towns in the region, after intense shelling. The shelling killed and injured hundreds of civilians, and displaced hundreds of thousands of others.

This attack is considered a continuation of the military operation launched by the Syrian government forces and Russia on Idlib on Apr. 25, 2019. During the military operation, the Syrian government forces gained total control of the northern countryside of Hama and the area of Khan Sheikhun. Military analysts and journalists said that by this military operation, the Syrian government aims to gain control of the Aleppo-Damascus international highway that connects Turkey to Jordan and the Arab Gulf States in order to reopen it later under Russian and Turkish sponsorship agreed upon by the two countries.
